Wanty McWant ;)
So, a friend of mine and I spent a friday walking around the different scooter stores in downtown Wellington, and this was the best deal we found:

(btw, that's a little under US$1,200 approximately in current exchange rates)

I sat on the bike, felt my weight on it, my size, had it started for me ... absolutely adore the thing, it was soooooo wonderful.

I really shouldn't do this to myself, because I can't really spend that kind of money right now till I have a job, but I soooo need and want one. I have no other kind of private transport at the moment, and the 15-20 walk up the steep hills of Wellington home to my sister's place from the train station is killing me.

But yeah, can't have it, so I really shouldn't torture myself like that ... guess popping this up on the blog is me indulging myself a tad in the same way, or just knowing it's the only thing I can really do at the moment with it.

*sigh*

Ooh, nice!

Just a reminder though (yeah right, like you need it!): the bus service in Wellington is fantastic, and they have buses that go almost everywhere.

They've changed it a bit since you were last in Wellington - divided Wellington into 3 zones instead of sections, done away altogether with ten-trip tickets and introduced something called a Snapper card, which you can use to pay for bus tickets, train tickets and cups of coffee around Wellington & the Hutt Valley.

Also, you should probably look on TradeMe, NZ's version of Ebay.

Yeah, I've looked through TradeMe a bunch, but I kinda like the idea of something new, because then I get a warranty, etc, which is really handy.

Now, yeah, Wellington does have a very excellent public transit system ... I'd say it's the best in NZ to be honest. But the neighbourhood where my sister lives is not well served unfortunately (it's a tad more affluent, and hence they don't use buses quite as much), particularly not by buses. There is the Johnsonville metlink train line, but my sister really does live wayyyyy up the top of one of the hills, so it's a monster climb from the train.

Don't get me wrong, I am definitely really pleased and thankful about the public trans here in Wellington ... I can get everywhere, but I would like a bit more flexibility ...

Will a 50cc scooter deal with the kind of significant hills that Wellington has such an ample supply of?

Yes actually, they are in copious use here, all over the place, given how dense the living in Wellington is, scooters and motorcycles make a ton of sense, and then when the weather closes in, the excellent public trans is right there too. I'm not going to say 50 cc scooters scream up the hills, but they seem to deal with them quite proficiently.

I wanted one before I came, but being here has not only increased the desire, but also shown me the necessity and excellence of fit.

*sigh*

But as I said above, I'm just torturing myself given that I can't afford one right now.
